«I want to live to be 150! A famous Kenyan long liver told how she makes her life longer»

A woman who lives in Embu, Vedu Kundu, was born in 1919 and lived through a lot of events and two wars. She saw a dozen of rulers taking turns. Kenya Book of Records says she is the oldest person who lives in the country now - she will turn 101 on August, 3.

Vedu outlived her same-age peers and even many children of her same-age peers.

A grandmother and even a great grandmother, she gets medical check-ups regularly. The doctors say the same annually: she is as healthy as an astronaut.

Even though she has lived a long life, Vedu Kundu rarely left her village and she always refused to move to a city. The age takes its toll, her children thought. But this long-lived woman has no problems with her age.

Vedu Kundy lives in a big wooden house built by her late husband. An old woman takes care of the house. She also has a vegetable garden which she works in annually, and she has to take care of cattle: a cow and chickens. She has enough energy for everything.

We visited a long liver to interview her and to learn about her main secret - how to live such a long life without falling sick. Sitting at a table with pies on it, we realized that we weren’t the only ones whom this old woman had to take care of, so we didn’t want to bother her with questions and switched to what we came for immediately.

- Vedu, you’ve lived such a long life. Much longer than anyone else’s. How did you manage to do it?

- I’ve already been asked about it many times (journalists regularly visit a long liver) and I’ve answered this question many times. The point is clear blood vessels. It’s Asmet who taught me this. He cured all country folk. People from other villages came for treatment, too. When the war started, he was deployed to treat soldiers. He didn’t come back. At that time, we were neighbours.

In the evenings, we used to spend time together and sometimes drank rum. We talked. He told us how to treat different diseases. I had a sister who had health issues.
